Expenditure Cascades

چکیده

Evaluative judgments are known to depend heavily on context. For example, the same car that would have been experienced as having brisk acceleration in 1950 would seem sluggish to most drivers today. Similarly, a house of given size is more likely to be viewed as adequate the larger it is relative to other houses in the same local environment. And an effective interview suit is one that compares favorably with those worn by other applicants for the same job. Although the link between context and evaluation is uncontroversial among behavioral scientists, the reigning economic models of consumer behavior completely ignore it. These models assume that each person’s consumption spending is completely independent of the spending of others. In contrast, James Duesenberry’s relative income hypothesis explicitly acknowledges the link between context and evaluation. In this paper we employ a variant of his model to explore the relationship between context and spending patterns. In this effort, we exploit data that allow us to quantify the effects of substantial increases in income inequality that have occurred in recent decades. According to the life-cycle and permanent income hypotheses, these increases should have no effect on individual spending decisions. In contrast, the relative income hypothesis predicts a substantial change in spending patterns in response to these changes. From statistical analysis of

Lignocellulose depolymerization occurs via an environmentally adapted metabolic cascades in the wood-rotting basidiomycete Phanerochaete chrysosporium

Plant biomass can be utilized by a lignocellulose-degrading fungus, Phanerochaete chrysosporium, but the metabolic and regulatory mechanisms involved are not well understood. A polyomics-based analysis (metabolomics, proteomics, and transcriptomics) of P. chrysosporium has been carried out using statistically optimized conditions for lignocellulolytic reaction. Thirty-nine metabolites and 123 g...

p38 MAPK and PI3K/AKT signalling cascades in Parkinson’s disease

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic neurodegenerative condition which has the second largest incidence rate among all other neurodegenerative disorders barring Alzheimer's disease (AD). Currently there is no cure and researchers continue to probe the therapeutic prospect in cell cultures and animal models of PD. Out of several factors contributing to PD prognosis, the role of p38 MAPKs (mitog...

Involvement of protein tyrosine phosphatases in adipogenesis: New anti-obesity targets?

Obesity is a worldwide epidemic as well as being a major risk factor for diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and several types of cancers. Obesity is mainly due to the overgrowth of adipose tissue arising from an imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. Adipose tissue, primarily composed of adipocytes, plays a key role in maintaining whole body energy homeostasis. In view of the tr...

Unraveling Adaptation in Eukaryotic Pathways: Lessons from Protocells

Eukaryotic adaptation pathways operate within wide-ranging environmental conditions without stimulus saturation. Despite numerous differences in the adaptation mechanisms employed by bacteria and eukaryotes, all require energy consumption. Here, we present two minimal models showing that expenditure of energy by the cell is not essential for adaptation. Both models share important features with...

Effects of Oil Returns and External Debt on the Government Expenditure: A Case Study of Syria

This study attempts to investigate the effect of oil returns and external debt on the government expenditure in Syria over the period 1970-2010. The Johansen cointegration test showed that oil returns and external debt have a positive and significant long run relationship with government expenditure. The Granger causality test indicates unidirectional short-run causality relationships running f...

P3: Mechanisms of TrkB-Mediated Hippocampal Long-Term Potentiation in Learning and Memory

Long-term potentiation (LTP) is a process that certain types of synaptic stimulation lead to a long-lasting enhancement in the strength of synaptic transmission. Studies in recent years indicate the importance of molecular pathways in the development of memory and learning. Tropomyosin receptor kinase B (TrkB) is a member of the neurotrophin receptor tyrosine kinase family, that its ligand is b...
